Modulous
The new modular paintings by Sydney Chastain-Chapman begin with a play on modular consumer products and the wide array of options. Sydney notes how even when her home is overflowing with anything from collections of clothing to art supplies, she still feels the overwhelming urge to consume. The panels of each work in the exhibition can be removed and rearranged in an attempt to alleviate Sydney's creative yearnings for more. In turn, the owner of each work can be part of the creative process by rearranging the work to suit personal taste. "Modular" depicts lavish McMansions in a mini-neighborhood constructed on various panels to be rearranged according to personal preference. The pre-fab housing models are broken down into what Sydney wryly describes as being modulous (both modular and fabulous) in a twist on over-consumption.
This will be Sydney Chastain-Chapman's third solo exhibition at
Kravets/Wehby Gallery. She had a recent solo exhibition at One in the Other in London and was featured in the June/July 2008 Art World Magazine. She was also included in "The Incomplete" exhibition at the Chelsea Art Museum last fall.
