The Kravets Wehby Gallery is thrilled to announce a group exhibition opening on Thursday, December 12th from 6-8PM. In Fire Emoji, new energetic and harmonious work will be on view by artists Alison Blickle, Drea Cofield, Laurena Finéus, Wendell Gladstone,Erin LeAnn Mitchell, Christina Nicodema, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, and Jade Thacker.
The art world, as nuanced an industry as it is, can reduce an artist to their social media presence. While a single image coming across certain eyes can be career changing, social media platforms seem to be oversaturated with artists posting to the void hoping that Instagram's algorithm will work in their favor. Alison Blickle (@alisonblickle) is based in Los Angeles, CA. Alison's practice is embedded in ritual. More recently, her curiosity in Artificial Intelligence has shifted to sensibility towards the revered tool. Her inclusion of AI generated imagery offers narratives and empathy for the personified technology.
Drea Cofield (@dreacofield) currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She received an MFA from Yale University School of Art. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Heaven Gallery in Chicago and Library Street Collective in Detroit. She debuted with Kravets Wehby Galleryin the fall with her solo exhibition Infinite Nude.
Laurena Finéus (@laurenafineus) is a Haitian-canadian interdisciplinary artist that is currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Through her practice, she contemplates black geographies and migratory histories. Laurena recently received an MFA from Columbia University. Her work is currently on view in the Brooklyn Museum in the Brooklyn Artists Exhibition.
Wendell Gladstone (@wendellgladstone) is based in Los Angeles, CA. His liminal paintings invite viewers for a peek inside the worlds he meticulously creates, often through windows. The figures, whose eyes are distant and dreamy, are seamlessly intertwined with their surroundings.
Erin LeAnn Mitchell (@erinleannworks) is from Birmingham, AL and honors Southern Matriarchal culture through her practice. She is in the current generation of the deep quilting tradition, using a mixture of textiles, paint, and collage for her complex and spirited assemblages. Erin is an avid traveler which informs her discipline by sourcing materials globally, and leaving with new admiration, knowledge, and inspiration. She is currently based in New York, NY.
Christina Nicodema's (@christinanicodema) elaborate paintings indulge in more than just delectable treats. Inspired by the plethora of visual information on social media, Christina sumptuously saturates her compositions. What appears as a still life of cake and flowers, at a closer look reveals a celebratory feast swarmed with rats, roaches, and bees. She is based in Queens, NY.
Jamea Richmond-Edwards (@jamearichmondedwards) has discovered her Indigenous American heritage through her practice. She is based in Detroit, MI, where she was born and raised. Jamea is known for her use of collage and vibrant colors to honor her ancestors, her children, and generations to come. Her work was recently included in major traveling exhibitions, A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration and Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage.
Jade Thacker (@champagnetears669) is based in Brooklyn, NY. Jade melds personal experience and the structure of vintage movie posters and magazine advertisements. Her clever layering of imagery, text, and color reveal her truest vehemences. She currently has work on view in the Brooklyn Museum in the Brooklyn Artists Exhibition.
