The Kravets Wehby Gallery is pleased to announce It’s Appropriate, a group exhibition of artists renowned for borrowing imagery, iconic and mundane, across all media to define their artistic disciplines. It’s Appropriate includes artists Mike Bidlo,Robert Colescott, Eric Doeringer, Vik Muniz, Walter Robinson, Cindy Sherman, Hank Willis Thomas, Andy Warhol, and Allison Zuckerman. This eclectic group of artists produce work on a spectrum of one-to-one translations and entirely new compilations from a myriad of sources.

It’s Appropriate is a multigenerational conversation between artists that use appropriation as their visual language. Much like how musicians collab, sample, and remix for projects that induce nostalgia and refresh narratives, visual artists communicate their respect for the past to bring forth an entirely new vision. Spanning from the mid 1970s to the present, this group’s unique approach to re-rendering commonly recognizable imagery exemplifies the cyclical nature of art history and pop culture. Between a reiteration by Vik Muniz of a reiteration of Andy Warhol’s Brillo Boxes and the recreation of Vermeer through the mind of Robert Colescott, this exhibition will praise those who are masters of emulation. Even Jackson Pollock’s action painting is expertly reproduced by the hand of Mike Bidlo.

Walter Robinson, who we lost not too long ago, was a cherished fixture in the artworld as an artist, writer, mentor, and friend to so many. A special thanks to Walter’s wife, Lisa Rosen
