Kravets Wehby Gallery will open a solo exhibition of new work by Los Angeles based artist Liv Aanrud on Thursday, February 8th 6-8PM. This is the artist's first solo show in New York City and with the gallery.
Liv grew up in rural Wisconsin where she spent much of her time exploring the family’s lake property as encouraged by her Mother. Through her work she tells stories of her childhood, friends, and nurturing Matriarchs. Because she has always found tranquility in nature’s splendors, each scene follows the chronicles of aloof, joyful women in a world she has created. Her highly intricate compositions evolve from her striking use of color and tufted yarn and universal symbols.
This is Ladies Island, and here, the residents are uninterested in the musings of men. The women are banded together, their capabilities never in question, they are resourceful and respectful. Unaware of the “male gaze,” the women developed a carefree lifestyle in pursuit of happiness and connecting to their surroundings. A symbiotic relationship formed between habitants and habitat— and as a result, everybody flourishes.
In Night Daises, Liv focuses on two figures pruning the terrain. The care these women offer their environment is also seen in Down River, where, in front of a massive waterfall, two figures are wringing out their hair over thriving flowers.
